PRESENTATION
For nearly twenty years, Experimenta has offered adults and children the possibility to explore science and its frontiers in an involving and fascinating manner. Over 2,000.000 visitors have taken advantage of this opportunity in the preceding editions. Experimenta 2005 presents the 19th edition to the public, which once again confirmsthe intent to divulge and at the same time to play, taking full advantage of a consolidated methodology assuring success.
The Piedmont Region, ever the brain, inventor and organiser of the exhibition, has also this year respected the promise to produce a scientific-interactive event at a high level. Thanks to the work of the Management of the Regional Committee involved, and the great amount of collaboration developed, in 2005 the value of Experimenta has strengthened once again, and will soon take on a permanent character in the birth of the Centre for Science “Exploit” a project in collaboration with the Province and the City of Turin.
“Experimenta” has grasped the unrepeatable opportunity of the Winter Olympics 2006, which will make Turin and the Piedmont Alps the world centre of sport on snow, to place itself in the parallel Cultural Olympics and invite its visitors to discover the scientific aspects of sports activities, especially those held in the mountains.
In “Experimenta 05 / Do you accept the challenge?” sport is therefore the point of departure and the central theme, inasmuch as it lends itself very well to exhibits and to experiments of an interactive and immersive character, according to the tradition.
The problem immediately arises about what kind of prospective to give to sport. The choice was not to bet on agonistic sport or on extreme sport, but to choose sports activities which have as the principal object, education for a healthy life and a harmonious relationship between the body and mind.
The “challenge” is intended first as an invitation to reach a goal, without forcing the performance of which all of us are capable. Only subsequently can this also become a challenge to others and to the environment for example that of the alpine summits.
From this the guiding idea of “intelligent muscles”: that is to say the attention to a sport sustained by the knowledge of the “machine” of our body, of a correct diet in relation to the athletic performance and to scientific and moral education that brings us to reject any recourse to doping.
In coherence with this project, “Do you accept the challenge?” develops the themes of muscular structure, motor co-ordination, aerobic and anaerobic activity, the relationship psyche/sport, training, influence of the environment in which the sports activity is undertaken.
However, Experimenta could not forget that the mountains were, and in part are still, an extraordinary scientific open sky laboratory. On the Alps in the second half of the 18th Century, they began the first research regarding the behaviour of the organism in rarefied area, the reactions to cold, about physics of the atmosphere and the adaptation that flora and fauna carry out where environmental conditions become extreme. Yet the Alps hosted, in the 20th Century, “Angelo Mosso”, Institute avant guard research on human physiology at altitude and then on the physics of cosmic rays and elementary particles in the Laboratories of Testa Grigia and of Mont Blanc. All these themes are developed in the exhibition, placing sport in a wider cultural framework, which goes from geology to physics, from meteorology to biology.
Experimenta has accepted the challenge, even this year, and thanks to the precious collaboration of public and private enterprises, and all those who with their contribution have permitted the realisation of this exhibition, presented as a double event; that of the summer, from June to November, and that in the winter from December to March 2006 which will accompany the Olympic event and enhance science and technology until the conclusion of the Para Olympics.
